Building Industry Green Debate Shifts from Acceptance to Defining Standards

Although the debate regarding the movement towards a greener building industry has ended, the discussion of what is meant by green or how standards are defined and applied continues to evolve according to a recent expert roundtable.

“The building industry has moved beyond whether or not ‘green’ is a viable and long term business strategy. They are now looking for ways to practically incorporate its best practices, standardize the measurements and galvanize the existing demand,” said Steve Fabry CEO of information services firm Compendia and moderator of The Green Mega Trend and Its Impact on Your Business.

But despite political and consumer will for all things green, there are still “kinks in the machinery” to work out, added panelist Brian Gitt, Executive Director for Build It Green, “We can’t yet agree on what it means to be green. There are multiple standards, vague policy goals, competing certification programs, and evolving technologies. But we all agree that the trend has transcended mainstream culture and builders must incorporate green as an overarching strategy to achieve superior long term success.”

Helping General Contractors Overcome the Troublesome Turnover Tangle

Compendia recently expanded its solution offerings to include an online document turnover resource for general contractors.

Modeled after the successful Home Experience and Community Experience, CloseoutCX helps GCs meet the strict requirements of Construction Specification Institute's (CSI) guidelines (Sections 01770/01780) and facilitate a seamless transfer of information to the project owners.

"Keeping tabs of the documents you are required to turnover at the end of a project is difficult and often problematic. As you turn control over to the project owner, you must ensure there is a full accounting of the thousands of critical documents prior to closeout," said Compendia COO Chris Fenton.

Home Experience: Builder Training Program

In order to increase the homebuilder’s effectiveness at promoting the online home resource management system Home Experience, Compendia launched a new training program that marries homeowner education with the builder’s existing sales and service processes.

“The number one benefit I hope our clients get from this program is understanding how to create a continuous, consistent communication platform with their buyers and owners, said Compendia CEO Steve Fabry. “Our training program is not just a tour of features and functions. It offers strategies for educating homeowners and prospective homebuyers in order to set proper expectations and get referrals.”

The training program, delivered in person or online, incorporates the needs of the various homebuyer-facing functions such as marketing, sales, closing administration, customer service and warranty response into a scope of action and activities to creates value and message consistency.
